Saturday, December 14 QVMS is hosting its own Math Counts Competition on Saturday, December 14. All students are welcome to sign up and experience another type of competition. Last year we hosted over 300 students. Look for more information on signupgenius. III. Fundraiser Update All cookie dough was delivered and picked up! Thank you! We made about $3000 for the club with 400 orders. Our top sales students were Pranav T., Hannah C., Harrison P., Claire G. and Crystal C. and Shivani G. Then we had another 25 students who made donation totaling $1900. We appreciate each person’s generous contribution of time and effort. Ms. Curtice and Ms. Nal greatly appreciate each one of you. IV. Raidermath Shirts Our Raidermath shirts should be delivered at the beginning of next week. Mrs. Curtice will distribute them. If your student did NOT order one, there should be extra ones available for purchase. A QVMS student must wear the Raidermath shirt for competitions. V. Looking for Exxon-Mobil Employees We have some parents who currently work for Exxon Mobil and they would like to know of more to join their group. Exxon Mobil allows volunteer hours at a competition of four adults who work from 9-2 to earn for the school $500.00. Out Math Club has benefited from this donation program for 3 years and hope to continue this year. Please send your name to Mrs. Curtice and she will connect you to other Exxon Mobil parents. If your employeer offers any special donation program, please let Mrs. Curtice know. VI. RaiderMath website Remember to go to www.raidermath.weebly.com to get the latest math club information. Mrs. Dali Fu is managing it for the club. VII. Emails needed If you did NOT complete a white info card at one of the 2 parent meetings earlier this year, please send your email to Mrs. Curtice. She will check to see if your email is on our large mail out. If not, she will get you listed. With over 100 students in the Varsity and Junior Varsity Math Club and Contest Math Elective, Mrs. Curtice needs a way to get an email distributed quickly. VIII. Students Volunteers Needed High School Students are welcome to come after school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday to earn YES hours by helping our math students. We currently have 5 coming on Monday. Mrs. Curtice would like 1-3 for Tuesday and Wednesday to help instruct calculator and/or number sense or just help solve general math. Also, on Thursday afternoon the 7th and 8th graders who are Varsity come to practice TMSCA. All are welcome! Please contact Mrs. Curtice, if interested. Mark your calendars for December 14. We will need ALL the high school volunteers to help with the scoring and be runners. More information later. ExxonMobil has a Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP). If a team of five Exxonmobil employees / retirees / family members volunteers for a total of 20 hours, ExxonMobil will donate $500 to a non-profit organization.
A volunteer from ExxonMobil Xiaoli will go with the MathCount team to San Antonio this weekend, and this counts at least 12 hours. If you or your spouse works for ExxonMobil and are willling to volunteer in any of the QVMS's math club activities, please let Xiaoli know. Xiaoli is trying to document at least 20 hours of volunteering hours by ExxonMobil employees or family members, so QVMS can get $500 from ExxonMobil. Clements TMSCA – 1st practice competition This is going to press BEFORE our first practice TMSCA competition on Saturday, October 27. We have 99 students currently registered to take 240 individual tests of number sense, calculator, general math and/or general science. Two parents, Mr. Cherivirala and Mr. Singal, are co-coaching our Raiders and managing the scoring room for QVMS’ results as Ms. Curtice cannot attend. (her phone number is on speed dial!) Go to www.raidermath.weebly.com to find out detailed results on Monday-Tuesday. Students will get their individual scores on Monday. The co-coaches will be given a sack containing all of QVMS’ results, but Ms. Curtice will need to separate all the tests and record all scores. This will give each student a “beginning” place from which to work and improve. If your student does not attend the meet, the actual test will be available to take and evaluate. Good luck RAIDERS! HELP NEEDED!!!!! Come to QVMS Tuesday Oct. 29th from 1:00 to 4:00 help sort and hand out our Cookie Dough Fundraiser. Mrs. Curtice will be working with two people from Otis Spunkmeyer. Monitor responsibilities: Arrive with your student. Go to the commons and get a sheet that has the students divided by testing times. You will walk the students (especially 6th graders) to the test rooms and get them settled. Then return for them ONLY if they do not take the next test. While in the Commons, monitor our tables for trash and used practice tests. Return all unused tests to the storage cart. Watch for any calculators left on the tables, When in doubt, put it into my storage cart and I will find the owner later. PLEASE do not allow any running. Our QVMS Raiders are great kids, but they are kids and require supervision. SCORING responsibilities – There should be an scoring meeting in the library around 9:00 a.m. Should you miss that, find Mr. Cherivirala or Mr. Singal in the library for directions. You will be paired up with other parents who can show you the steps to scoring number sense, calculator (rather tedious), general math and general science. Generally, we do NOT score QVMS papers. But it will depend on how many school and students are present. Both coaches will have lists of our students. If time allows, copy each student’s score onto the main list. If not, I will do it Sunday evening. My cell phone is 281-787-7588. Please put me on your speed dial and keep me updated on the day! I will be thinking about you from 8-2. Our Raiders will have a great day. Realize that 60 of our 99 students are sixth graders and that for 7/8 of them , this is their FIRST competition. There may be some extreme scores (don’t fret – it is more for the experience). WHAT DO YOU NEED for CLEMENTS TMSCA? Although our RAIDERMATH shirts were ordered last week, they are not ready until Nov. 1. So plan to wear a QVMS shirt or green or gold shirt. Represent QVMS proudly. Bring a light jacket and dress appropriately. You will need sharpened pencils for the general math, general science and calculator test. For NUMBER SENSE only, you use a BLUE INK pen. Mrs. Curtice will check out calculators to any sixth, seventh or eighth grader at school on Friday. Those are used on the calculator test only. Students must return them on Monday to QVMS and Mrs. Curtice. Please do not leave them sitting on the lunch tables in the commons. Bring cards or a book to read in between tests. A concession stand will be open and pizza will be available. If you need to leave before the award ceremony, please sign out in the commons from a parent volunteer monitor. UPON arriving, do NOT stop at the registration table. Mrs. Curtice has already checked you in and you go directly into the commons, find the QVMS table and sign in with a parent volunteer. Good LUCK. |
