There will be NO Junior Varsity Math Club on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. Varsity Math Club II will NOT meet on Wednesday. The ONLY club to meet will be Varsity Math Club I under the direction of Mrs. Nal. Everyone will be reviewing for Mid-Term Exams. The clubs will resume in January.
However, due to the need for math tutorials, there will be some adjustments to the current after school math club schedule. Mrs. Curtice needs to work in small groups with some students and the lunch time is not sufficient. You will get more details in January. I. Competition News We are proud to announce that our Raider mathletes participated in the Dulles High School TMSCA meet on Saturday, November 22 and earned 2nd place in Sweepstakes. We took FIRST PLACE in Science, SECOND Place in General Math, Second Place in Calculator and Third Place in Number Sense. We had over 70 students participating. A huge thanks to Mrs. Kent for attending the last half of the competition as Mrs. Curtice had to leave for a family event. You can visit https://tmsca.skc.name/contestResults to see all the results. This is Dulles High School’s math club’s website. II. Currently, we are looking for any TMSCA competitions that will be offered in January and/or February in our local area. Please contact Mrs. Curtice if you hear of any upcoming competitions. III. Saturday, December 13, the Houston Math Counts Competition will be hosted at the Toyota Center from 1:00 – 4:30. Then the students will attend the Rockets basketball game that evening at 7 p.m. Mrs. Curtice will be there from 1:00 – 4:30, but she needs2 parents to volunteer to take her place and attend the basketball game only. She has an event that she must attend with her husband that evening. Please contact her ASAP. It is not an easy task balancing math club competitions and personal family. We already have 9 parents accompanying their students. But we have about 9 students who are coming independently and need supervision. It should be quite enjoyable! Students attending the Toyota Center should bring a sack lunch to eat between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. That will be much easier than trying to drive to a downtown location to eat. Also, Mrs. Curtice will send home a letter with each student who has registered to see if some carpooling can be arranged. Parents can drop off his/her student by Noon to 12:30 that day, but picking them up after the game could be quite challenging. It would be much easier to carpool home and get picked up at QVMS. Would a parent be interested in handling that for Mrs. Curtice? IV. NUMBER SENSE ? The math coach from Flower Bluff, Mr. Anthony Gillespie, has published his number sense tips in an excellent workbook. He has free videos available on www.mathninja.org . Mrs. Curtice purchased one and recommends that any student who is SERIOUS about number sense, order one of his/her own to practice. The book costs $25.00 and will really benefit the learning of the number sense rules. You are welcome to look at Mrs. Curtice’s book before your order. V. STATE TMSCA – There are three competitions starting February 21 at The Village School, February 28 at First Colony Middle School, and the Regional Qualifier on March 7 at Quail Valley Middle School. Students will be trying to score a certain point value on the number sense, calculator, general math and general science tests. Then they would qualify to attend the State TMSCA Competition that is held in San Antonio. The range of qualifying scores will be published in January. Please mark your calendar for March 7. We host this Regional Competition and had over 400 students last year. We will need everyone helping with registration, scoring, concessions, photography, trophies, running test papers, proctoring the tests, etc. We hope to see everyone! Any questions, please contact Mrs. Curtice. |
