Why does Math Club need to have a fundraiser
In order to pay for memberships in Math Counts, TMSCA, The Math Olympiad, The Math League, Continental Math, etc, the QVMS Math Club must raise its own funds. Each math club student brought home this week a brochure offering 12 delicious types of pre-formed cookies, ready to bake or freeze up to a year. Each tub contains 3 dozen cookies. Also available are brownies, pretzels and this year….PIZZA – both pepperoni, cheese and vegetarian. All items are $16.00 and about ½ of each item returns to the club. Please consider supporting the Math Club and purchase some of the Otis Spunkmeyer products. RETURN THE ORDER FORM FRIDAY, October 4 to Mrs. Curtice. IF YOU WANT AN EXTRA FORM TO TAKE TO YOUR OFFICE, PLEASE ASK. Mrs.Curtice has extra order forms available. The top 6 students selling the most orders will get a FREE tub of cookie dough! Thank you in advance for your support! DONATIONS If you would rather make a donation than sell the product, please complete the enclosed form. Check with your employer to see if your company makes a matching donation to a school. Junior Varsity Clubs
All three clubs, I, II, and III are underway. This week each student received a complimentary “flip book”. This will become a source of Number Sense shortcuts in multiplication and more. Ask your student to demonstrate “FOIL – The Rainbow Method”. Here the student can solve 17 squared or 23 X 12 without pencil and paper. Practice each day, and the process will get easier. Bring the flip book every week. Also, if your student has a “Little Red Book” of number sense, he/she can bring it to club meetings. We will review each of these in the many weeks and then venture into a more in depth set of number sense rules. The “Little Red Book” is $8.00 and is available for purchase from Mrs. Curtice. These were offered last May at the GT Academy night. If you missed purchasing one, contact Mrs. Curtice. Varsity Math Club I and II Mrs. Nal has selected a group of 7th and 8th graders to be the Varsity Math Club I. She will be working diligently to train these students in the Math Counts curriculum of advanced problem solving. Some of our sixth graders may work with her as the year moves forward. She is looking for eager sixth graders who want to practice at home and advance his/her math skills. Mrs. Curtice and Mrs. Nal are working together to identify the students. Varsity Math Club II – It was a huge success last Thursday About twenty-five (25) 7th and 8th graders came and divided themselves into groups interested in number sense, calculator, and general math. We will be primarily working on these categories for TMSCA (Texas Math and Science Coaches Association ). Students are welcome to still attend if they missed the first session. PARENT MEETING – Monday, September 30 – 5:45 – 6:30 There will be a short meeting Monday night in Room 119-121 at QVMS. Some topics to be discussed will be Varsity and Junior Varsity Club selection, upcoming competition dates, t-shirts, etc. If you cannot make it, go to our website www.raidermath.weebly.com . We want to thank Ms. Fu for volunteering to maintain that for Mrs. Curtice. This year parent volunteers are going to be needed to successfully manage 90+ sixth graders attending competitions. Snack Time At the beginning of every club, the students may purchase a snack from the Math Club or bring something from home. It has been a long time since lunch and many students are hungry. Items cost $.25 to $.50 each. These monies go to the Math Club. TMSCA and FPS Conflict We have just found out that Future Problem Solving (FPS) and TMSCA will have a conflict this year. Both State Meets are on the same weekend – Saturday, April 12. Your student CANNOT do both and we do NOT have the ability to change the dates. Be aware of that conflict. Your student will have to choose which club to support. It is not fair to try to do both and then disappoint a team by choosing the other. Therefore, decide now which to try and support it fully. Junior Varsity Math Club #1, #2, #3
Junior Varsity Math Club #1, #2 and #3 are all up and running! Ninety (90) sixth graders attended the three meeting dates. Number Sense was introduced and the students learned how to multiply a squared number mentally without pencil/paper. They will work to memorize the squares from 1-40. We will be using “The Little Red Book”. This book was sold last May during out GT night for $8.00. Next week, your student will bring home an order form if they missed the opportunity to buy one. FLIP BOOKS The easiest way to learn each number sense rule is to list it in a “flip book”, a set of 3 X 5 cards connected with a spiral. Then the student can easily carry it with them and refer to the rule/process. Mrs. Curtice has ordered 100 of the flip books and will have them at the JV meetings. You can bring your own or bring $1.50 and purchase one there. SNACK TIME Our school day is full and by 4:00 everyone needs a snack. Therefore, snacks will be available for purchase at the beginning of each meeting. The price range is $.25 to $1.00. There will be chips, crackers, and sodas available. Your student is welcome to bring his/her own snack from home. These monies go into the Math Club fund. |
