We need some information to effectively communicate with parents. Most parents who attended the parent meetings turned in the Math Club Information Sheet. Please email Mrs. Curtice with the information, or have your child bring in the form to Mrs. Curtice if you haven't completed the form yet. Thanks!

All cookie dough orders are set to be delivered Tuesday, October 29. Ms. Curtice needs volunteers for that afternoon to distribute the 413 orders. The time is approximately 2:00-2:30 to start unloading the product and separating it into individual orders. (Mrs. Curtice will verify that time in next week’s newsletter. )The students will start picking up the orders at 3:30 that day to take home. The items stay frozen for 3-4 hours. Students can carry 4 tubs easily. If your order is greater than that, PLEASE make arrangements to come to QVMS between 3:30 to 6:00 to pick it up. Mrs. Curtice does NOT the facilities to store your orders. Read the article below to find top sellers and final outcome of our fundraiser. Thank you for your support! CLEMENTS TMSCA – Saturday, October 26 We had a fantastic response for volunteers to attend the 1st TMSCA practice competition at Clements High School . Look for Mrs. Curtice to be emailing you a list of all the scorers and monitors. We have 80+ QVMS Academy students participating. Most of these are “First time” participants and will need some assistance finding their way to the testing rooms at Clements High School. If you do not receive a list, by Tuesday, October 22, email Mrs. Curtice. You are welcome to help any time from 7:30 – 2:00.(The ending time can be earlier depending on volunteer help scoring. EARLY VOLUNTEERS Needed – That Saturday, Mrs. Curtice needs one to two people who can arrive at 7:30a.m. and select tables in the commons for our students. They will have the practice materials to spread out onto the tables for the students as well as be the first to check in students. Mrs. Curtice is trying to have all calculators checked out during school on Friday. Calculators are only allowed on the calculator test. As the competition begins at 9:00, those students taking number sense and calculator SHOULD arrive by 8:00 to find our tables and begin to warm up by doing some practice problems. Students taking just math and science should arrive by 9:30 or 10:30 respectfully. Each parent monitoring will have a specific group of students to walk to the testing rooms and pick up and return them to the commons (specifically sixth graders). Scoring - If you are scoring, arrive by 9:00 and go to the Clements Library. There you will be placed with other adults to score the four tests. All help is needed – from 1 hour to the entire competition. Thank you in advance. ENDING the COMPETITION – Following the awards ceremony, Mr. Cherivirala, one of the parents who will be the co-coach, will be given all the QVMS testing materials. NONE WILL BE DISTRIBUTED that DAY. Mrs. Curtice will get the tests, record them and sort them for distribution during the school week. Please do NOT ask for your students original papers that day. Mrs. Curtice is asking all QVMS parents to help monitor our students. We will have the largest group participating and we want to be sure we model Raider Pride and Raider Respect! II. Mark your Calendars 1. Saturday, November 16 – 2nd TMSCA Practice Competition to be held at Elkins High School in FBISD. Registration information will be available after October 30. 2. Saturday, November 23 – 3rd TMSCA Practice Competition to be held at Dulles High School in FBISD. Registration information will be available after October 30. 3. Saturday, December 14 – QVMS Fifth Annual Math Competition to be held at QVMS. Mrs. Curtice has decided to host this event again this year, but she desperately needs all parents to help. Last year we had over 300 students participate. She is looking for 1-2 people to handle registration. A huge thank you to Mrs. Brough who is creating an email distribution list for Mrs. Curtice. We plan to make it possible to volunteer online as well as register online. We will need people to manage registration that day, handle the concessions, run the hospitality in the library for all volunteers, proctor the tests, manage the scoring room, do computer entries and score! We invite all high school students to come and earn “Yes” hours for community service. Mr. Simmons will be on hand to manage the computer entries. If you are interested in managing this with Mrs. Curtice, please contact her. Any and all help will be appreciated. This competition is different from TMSCA as it focuses on problem solving. The categories are a Sprint Round, Target Round and Team Round. If you have never watched a Count Down Round, plan on being there. It is quite amazing. This date is only eight weeks away and that time will pass quickly. Any suggestions, are welcome. 4. We have sixty (60) students who have signed up to experience the TMSCA practice meet at Clements High School. For most of these students , it will be their first experience in a competition. Mrs. Curtice is very proud of each one and wishes she could be there with them. She will be thinking about them and will have the co-coaches on “speed dial” to get all the updates. Any questions, email Mrs. Curtice. Practice Materials Available If you have signed up for a TMSCA competition, you can request a practice test to work on at home. Just see Mrs. Curtice WHAT DO YOU NEED for CLEMENTS TMSCA? Although our RAIDERMATH shirts were ordered last week, they might now be delivered by Friday October 25. So plan to wear a QVMS shirt or green or gold shirt. Represent QVMS proudly. Bring a light jacket and dress appropriately. You will need sharpened pencils for the general math, general science and calculator test. For NUMBER SENSE only, you use a BLUE INK pen. Mrs. Curtice will check out calculators to any sixth, seventh or eighth grader at school on Friday. Those are used on the calculator test only. Students must return them on Monday to QVMS and Mrs. Curtice. Please do not leave them sitting on the lunch tables in the commons. Bring cards or a book to read in between tests. A concession stand will be open and pizza will be available. If you need to leave before the award ceremony, please sign out in the commons from a parent volunteer monitor. UPON arriving, do NOT stop at the registration table. Mrs. Curtice has already checked you in and you go directly into the commons, find the QVMS table and sign in with a parent volunteer. Good LUCK! It is going to be a GREAT YEAR! I. WANT ADS
Anyone Available? – Mrs. Curtice is looking for someone to create an email list. She has all the emails from parents, etc and would like someone to type it into the computer and create for her an email listing of everyone. This would help with information distribution. If interested, please email Mrs. Curtice. VOLUNTEERS for CLEMENTS TMSCA (map) – Thank you! Mrs. Curtice has received over 25 emails from parents who are available to help with the TMSCA practice competition on Saturday, October 26 at Clements High School. As she will not be present, two gentlemen with previous experience scoring and seeing the workings of a TMSCA competition will be working the scoring room. Mrs. Curtice will distribute a list to those who responded a note to tell each where their help will be needed – monitoring the 6th and 7th and 8th graders and/or scoring. We currently have 45 students signed up and that number will increase. If you would like to help, please email Mrs. Curtice. THREE WEEKS AWAY – Near the end of the month, our cookie orders will arrive. Mrs. Curtice will desperately need some parents from 1:00 -4:15 to help distribute the cookie dough. Please check your calendars to see if you have an hour or so to help. II. CLUB NEWS Varsity Club #1 is meeting on Mondays from 4:15 – 5:30 under the direction of Ms. Nal. That group is traveling to San Antonio on October 25-26 to compete in the San Antonio Math Counts Competition. We wish them well! Varsity Club #2 is meeting on Thursdays from 4:15 – 5:30 in Room 211 under the direction of Ms. Curtice for all 7th and 8th graders who wish to practice for TMSCA. Students can choose from number sense, calculator, general math and general science. Feel free to drop in any week. Junior Varsity#1,#2,#3 are meeting on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in Room 211 under the direction of Mrs. Curtice from 4:15 – 5:30. They are working on number sense rules. Also, they have looked at their first practice TMSCA Math Test. Many students chose to take their copy home to practice. Sixth graders will NOT know all the problems. They are to go through the test, working the ones they know. Bring the test to Ms. Curtice to evaluate answers and then we start learning the ones they don’t know. Sixth graders learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions this year. In Junior Varsity, they are introduced to it now. Remember: the process is more important than the quantity. As the students learn more concepts, they will successfully work more problems. (Parents: Do not try to teach the most difficult problems. Work upward. ) When that test is reviewed, request more practice from Mrs. Curtice III. CALENDAR 1. Saturday, October 26 – Clements TMSCA Practice Competition – register through Mrs. Curtice. Each event of number sense, calculator, general math and general science is $5.00 or $7.00 after October 11. Registration forms are outside every math room. 2. The computer form is being completed (the second time because Mrs. Curtice lost the completed one after many hours of typing!) and they will arrive in three weeks. We have raised over $3000 for our club and its financial needs. In addition – donations have almost equaled that amount. Mrs. Curtice and Ms. Nal thank you for your time and generosity. PARENT MEETING - #1 AND #2 Monday, September 30 – was our first parent meeting. We realize that many parents were unable to attend. To update you, we discussed the fund raiser and its importance. Mrs. Nal explained the process for selecting the Varsity Math Club #1 participants. Math Counts is the primary emphasis for that group and it involves very complex problem solving. Varsity Math Club #1 meets on Monday from 4:15 – 5:30 and students are welcome to sit in and listen to the instruction. However, the Tuesday session is available only to the selected members. That group will be traveling to San Antonio to compete in its first Math Counts competition on Saturday, October 26. Monday, October 7 October 7 will be our second parent meeting. Please see the the post below to parents requesting volunteers so that our students can participate in the Clements TMSCA practice competition. As Ms. Curtice must attend a wedding, she is arranging for parents to monitor the students and volunteer as scorers. STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ATTEND WITHOUT A PARENT. It is so important that Raider Pride and Raider Respect be demonstrated at all times by our QVMS students. Registration forms are available outside Mrs. Curtice’s math class and outside Mrs. Nal’s math class. The forms are due to Mrs. Curtice by Thursday, October 10 for early bird registration of $5.00 per test. After that, the fee will be $7.00 per test. Once again, see attached letter regarding Clements. All Junior Varsity and Varsity Math Club members are eligible to attend the TMSCA Competition. Upcoming will be November 16 – Elkins High School and November 23 – Dulles High School. We are very fortunate to have three high school nearby that host practice TMSCA competitions.Check our calendar frequently for updates. Sad News but with a Happy Ending: Friday, October 4 will be Mrs. Nal’s last day to teach at QVMS. Due to personal and family reasons, she is unable to continue at QVMS. HOWEVER, she will still be coming to QVMS every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to volunteer and continue to coach our Varsity Math Club. She will be joining Mrs. Curtice at 7th period to continue the Contest Math Elective and will be coaching Varsity Math Club #1 on Monday and Tuesday.
