MATH PLACEMENT TEST FOR COMPETITIVE MATH CLUB Are you interested in joining the amazing QVMS Raider Math Club? Please keep reading for some important information. First, math club is going through a transition period. Mrs. Jones, who has been the main math club sponsor will no longer be with QVMS. A new sponsor is in the process of being hired, and we trust that math club will be better than ever! Due to this, the information below is accurate to the best of our knowledge but is subject to change! Here are the most commonly asked questions we get: 1. How can I join math club? Make sure your parents watch out for email communication and check this website over the summer for more information and plan to attend a placement test close to the beginning of the school year. This is not a pass or fail test but simply a way for the sponsors to group kids with others who have similar abilities. The fee for math club is $60 for the year, so students will be required to take the placement test and pay the fee in order to join. If interested in the competitive group, they may also be required to complete an application process. 2. How many club groups are there and when do they meet? Generally the club is divided into 4-5 competitive groups and one For Fun group. Competitive groups generally meet one day a week and the For Fun group meets every other week. Clubs last for around an hour. 3. What do the students do in the groups? There are two kinds of math club groups: the competitive groups and the for fun groups. Competitive groups are focused on preparing students for competitions. Realistically, these groups take tests, score tests and go over the questions. If you don't think that this sounds like a ton of fun, competitive groups are not your best option. The for fun group does math games and activities where they gather data and analyze that data. This is a group for students who love hands-on activities! 4. What is the difference between Math Club and Contest Math? Math Club is an after-school program and Contest Math is an elective class offered during school hours. Note: Students may have already taken a qualification test for the Contest Math elective at their zoned campus, however, this test does not apply to the GT Academy. Due to the additional Spanish credit in middle school, there is no room for the Contest Math elective in 6th graders' schedules, so our Contest Math class is generally open to only 7th and 8th grade students. 5. Who teaches the club groups? QVMS math teachers cover the For Fun group and awesome volunteers help us teach the other competitive groups. Volunteer teachers are determined every year, but we always need more! Parents, contact the math club sponsor if you're interested in helping out! 6. May I get more information about the competitions QVMS attends? There is a ton of information about competitions under the FAQ page as well as detailed information about our main competitions. Poke around the website to your heart's content! 7. Can I still go to competitions even if I'm not in math club? It depends on the competition. Although somewhat out of date, the Math Club Intro video will give you some good information about which clubs are open to anyone interested and which ones require students to qualify. Generally speaking, if you aren't in math club, you may have some trouble qualifying for some competition, especially our most difficult ones. 8. Is there a way for me to prepare for competitions over the summer? Check out the resources tab above. There are links to lots of practice material! 9. Do I have to be good at math in order to join math club? Absolutely not, plus we think ANYONE can be good at math, so don't be too quick to label yourself as bad at math! We have all types of students, and the only requirement is that you love math and want to learn more. With that said, if you find yourself getting bored or frustrated easily in the math class, then the For Fun club is probably a better fit for you than the competitive clubs. 10. How do I stay informed about math club throughout the school year? Check this site often as well as your email, and pay attention to what is there especially regarding deadlines. Many students have missed opportunities because they aren't reading the information carefully enough! Note: Make sure you check your SPAM folder, as some accounts think we're junk mail! |
