The business is just across the street from the University of Texas. If you are going to be there in your car, please consider doing this for the students! ****************************************************************************************************** WEEKLY Math Clubs The Tuesday Club welcomed 40 students this week. Thank you to Ms. Biddle for helping with these students. We will have Tuesday math club on Tuesday, March 31 because the STAAR test for Writing will be over. Seven QVMS math students (Shree M., Andrew L, Ben W, Allen Z, Kevin J, Naveen M., and Lauren Y) will travel next Friday to Austin to defend their first place from the Chapter competition in February. We wish them the best! QVMS MATH CLUBS Tuesday was a big success! A huge thank you to Mr. Patel for assisting Mrs. Curtice and the 35 sixth graders who came after school to work on general math. The students were split into two groups and worked helping each other solve the various problems. Wednesday Varsity II had the extra benefit of four Dulles High School former Academy students who came and worked with the 7th and 8th graders on various areas of number sense, calculator, general math and general science. To date, 90 students have qualified for the State TMSCA Competition to be held on April 11 in San Antonio, Texas. Saturday, March 7 will be the LAST qualifier and QVMS is hosting that meet. We have over 453 students registered from 25 middle schools. We hope you are available to volunteer and make this an event a success. All qualifiers will receive a state packet after Spring Break.
MATH CLUB – weekly meetings Starting after Spring Break, there are NO MORE Monday or Thursday math clubs. All 6th graders are welcome to come on Tuesday. We will be focusing in smaller groups on the TMSCA State competition categories of number sense, calculator, general math and/or general science. We are hoping to have some former QVMS GT students come and lead the groups. The Wednesday Varsity II group may come and work on tests and check them with answer keys. Mr. Shui completed his lessons with this group with a pizza party on Wednesday, March 4. We appreciate his time, energy and generosity to help our QVMS students learn and understand various math concepts presented in TMSCA. If you have not yet signed up yet there is still space. Details below:
Elementary contest (afternoon of March 14) - http://mathleague.org/escontest.php?event=4032 This will be the last chance to qualify for the May 9 state championship aside from the mail-in round that will be released to member schools later this month (see http://mathleague.org/membership.php for more details). QVMS is hosting the qualifier for May 9, but it is only for 6th graders. Middle school contest (morning of March 14) - http://mathleague.org/mscontest.php?event=4028 This test is part of a series of contests held in six states across the country this March, allowing top middle school teams to compare their scores directly against their peers in other states for the first time (see http://mathleague.org/inter2sect.php for more details). In addition to local awards, we will also be giving a trophy to the top scoring team in the country on this test. This test will be an excellent way to prepare for state MATHCOUNTS, and for those of you who end up going on to nationals, to see how you rank against students from other states who are also going to nationals. |
