Competition Updates QVMS hosted 210 students on January 18 for the Fifth Annual QVMS Math Counts Competition. This competition is high level word problems. QVMS proudly took third place sweepstakes. Our students who placed in the top ten were Carter C (7th) and Ben W. (10th). The top five (5) sixth graders were Ben W. (1st QVMS)), Edward L. – Beck , Vish G. – Harmony , Allen Z (4th- QVMS), Alvin X. – Beckendorff. For a complete listing, see Contest Information. KLEIN OAKS TMSCA Forty Raiders traveled to Klein Oaks High School on Saturday, January 25 and WON FIRST PLACE SWEEPSTAKES – highest total points in number sense, calculator, general math and general science. Red registration forms are available by every math classroom or you can download one from the website. We have a bus leaving at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday ($10 round trip) to Clear Lake High School. There will be two (2) more qualifiers: First Colony Middle School on March 1, and Quail Valley Middle School – Regionals – March 8. Thursday, January 16- Sixty students competed in the first QVMS School Math Counts Competition on Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 3:00 to 6:30. The students took a Sprint Round, a Target Round and from that total, the top ten students were chosen for the live Countdown Round. We are proud to announce the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place students. They are Shree Mohan, 3rd place; Andrew Liu, 2nd place and our FIRST OFFICIAL QVMS SCHOOL MATH COUNTS CHAMPION is Carter Chu. On February 8 at the Fluor Building in Sugar Land, ten (10) of our top math students will represent QVMS in the Chapter Competition. The top schools move to state from that competition. Thank you to the parents who came to score. Way to go Raidermath! Saturday, January 18 – QVMS welcomes 200 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students on Saturday, January 18 to compete in the 5th Annual QVMS Math Counts Tournament. They will take three tests: Sprint, Target, and Team as well as strive to be part of the Count Down Round. All these tests are higher level problem solving. We thank in advance all the parents and especially the 40 high school students who volunteered their time and services to make this competition a success. A special thank you to Ms. Boitz and Coach Fox who shared some of their weekend time with us. Also, our former teacher, Mr. Simmons, not only wrote the 3 tests for us, he ran our computer scoring and entry. This competition takes everyone helping and sharing their skills. We need many people to make aturday, Jan. 18 a success! All the needed areas are listed. Please consider giving an hour or more to make this event a successful one! Your student should bring home a pink form to register for this event. The fee is $10. Klein Oaks TMSCA – This competition conflicts with a testing of SAT, but we are still going. Bus transportation is available. Your student should have a green or white full paper form to complete. Pizza orders MUST be made with the registration. Deadline is in one week, but please register early, if possible. MATH CLUB NEWS Monday – The AMC 10 is being given Monday afternoon with the Varsity I club. Any 6th grader who would like to take it should tell Ms. Curtice and plan to stay from 4:00 to 5:30. It is a 75 minute test. This is designed for 10th grade students. See Ms. Curtice for details. Monday Math Club – The JV group for Monday will still meet in Ms. Curtice’s room. Tuesday, Wednesday Math Club – meet on normal days next week. Then starting Jan. 21, both groups will meet on Tuesdays. I apologize for the inconvenience, but Ms. Curtice must be at a school meeting on Wednesday afternoons starting then.
