Deadline to turn in fundraiser/donations is Monday, September 29. Please bring your form to Mrs. Curtice. Remember if your student is in a Junior Varsity, Varsity or Competition Math Class or if your student plans to go to any math competitions this year, he or she should participate in the fundraiser/donation for the club. There is an account for each student and what he/she raises or contributes is a positive for that student. Otherwise, when there is a need for a bus, etc, a fee will have to be paid.
DEADLINE to REGISTER for the First Math Counts Competition is Monday, September 29. All grades are welcome to register. Pick up a form outside Mrs. Hitchcock’s room or Mrs. Curtice’s room or visit our website www.raidermath.weebly.com to download a registration form. PLEASE return the form to Mrs. Curtice so she can register all the students at one time from QVMS. HELP NEEDED! – October 11, Math Counts Competition at QVMS We will be sending out a signup genius for our first competition. We will need 3-4 parents to check in students (7:30-8:45) , 4-6 parents to work the concession stand from ( 8:30-noon) and parents to monitor and pass our materials during the test (5-8) and then parents to score (as many as possible). Please check your availability and hopefully find an hour or two to help. MATH CLUB NEWS Junior Varsity I (Monday) – will meet from 4:15 to 5:30 with Mrs. Curtice – bring your snack or money for a snack. We are learning the number sense rules and will look at the Math Counts testing format. Junior Varsity II (Tuesday ) – will NOT meet this coming week. Plan to come October 7. A huge thank you to Ms. Biddle for offering her time and help on Tuesdays. Wednesday, Varsity I and II – will meet this week. Varsity II is open to all 7th and 8th graders who want to improve their TMSCA Math skills. We are fortunate to have a dad teaching with us. Mr. Shui has analyzed several of the general math tests and have found common problem types that he is teaching to the students. If the students will go home and practice these, their scores are guaranteed to improve. Junior Varsity III (Thursday) – will meet from 4:15 to 5:30 with Mrs. Curtice – bring your snack or money for a snack. We are learning the number sense rules and will look at Math Counts testing format. Middle School and High School Volunteers – Ms. Curtice would like to acknowledge the former GT Academy students who are coming on our club days to help our current math club members. These students offer one-on one help with number sense, general math and more. Yes volunteer hours are available. TMSCA Competitions – Clements has announced that they will NOT be hosting a competition this fall. So currently it looks like mid-November before we attend a TMSCA meet at Elkins and Dulles High Schools unless Mrs. Curtice can find one earlier. Last year, Atascocita hosted one, but that is not confirmed for 2014. Look for more information on that. RAIDERMATH SHIRTS – COMING SOON!!! As soon as all the fundraiser /donation forms are turned in, Mrs. Curtice will send home forms to order a Raidermath Shirt. This shirt must be worn at all competitions and any time at QVMS. It is the same shirt that our club has had, so if your last year’s shirt still fits, you are ready to go. If not, you will be able to order a new one. We will put this info on the website. Mrs. Curtice is working to get a distribution email for everyone, but the easiest way now to communicate is to access our website: www.raidermath.weebly.com. Any suggestions or questions, please email Mrs. Curtice. MATH CLUB NEWS – visit www.raidermath.weebly.com for all the latest news for Math Club

More information to follow. V. Parent Volunteers – A huge thank you to two dads who came Tuesday afternoon to help with Tuesday’s Junior Varsity. Being able to break into groups of 4-5 is much more beneficial than large group instruction of 30+. If you are available any Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday from 4:15 – 5:30, please consider assisting. Contact Mrs. Curtice, if interested. VI. Student Volunteers – We have students coming from Clements High School on Wednesdays. Mrs. Curtice needs some for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Donations – Parents - Please check with your businesses and ask if they have any matching donation programs or volunteer programs that might benefit our math club. Exxon Mobil and BP do, but there are probably more. Please check the website often as Mrs. Curtice will post all updates these. We are creating a distribution list, but it is not completed to date. All suggestions are welcome. OCT 11th STAR LEARNING MATHCOUNTS TOURNAMENT

Make Check Payable to: Quail Valley Middle School Click here for detail information WOW!!! – Over 90 parents attended our first math club parent meeting on Wednesday, September 10. I have included below some of the highlights discussed. A parent from the meeting on Wednesday night suggested that the math parents form a core group of veteran parents and mapout points of leadership. Here are some of the areas suggested:
Concession point person High school volunteer recruiter
This person could alert the club on district policies and ask for parent action/voices when needed
With the parent energy that I saw last night, we should be able to have parents step up and take on some needed leadership roles. I am the teacher of record, but I cannot begin to manage the 150+ students alone any more. I welcome all your suggestions. Mrs. Curtice WEEKLY MATH CLUBS – Time is 4:15 – 5:30 Monday – JV I – 6th graders working on number sense, squares and calculator skills. Tuesday – JVII – 6th graders working on number sense, squares and calculator skills. Those students already advanced in these areas, will work separately on strengthening and increasing the pacing of their skills Wednesday – Varsity I and Varsity II – Varsity I is by invitation only. Varsity II is open to all 7th and 8th graders who wish to compete in Math Counts and TMSCA. They are expected to come ready to practice and focus on improvement. Thursday – JV III – 6th graders working on number sense, squares and calculator skills. Snacks will be available for purchase from $.25 to $1.00. Students may also bring their own from home. UPCOMING CALENDAR EVENTS 1. October 11 – Math Counts Competition – hosted at QVMS – sponsored by Star Learning – concesions and registration sponsored by RAIDERMATH CLUB - $15.00 entry fee – registration forms will be available from the green hallway bulletin boards on Monday, September 15. Volunteers Welcome We have had six Clements High School students (former GT Academy students) come and help at the JV and Varsity Clubs. NJHS students are welcome to register with Mrs. Curtice to come and help Monday, Tuesday or Thursday to earn YES hours. Thank you to a dad who is going to come on Wednesday to Varsity to assist Ms. Nal. The Varsity I group has 35 participants and that is too large. Contact Mrs. Curtice is you are interested. I have more calendar events, but they will be listed in the weeks to come. I have had inquiries for 6th graders to come to Wednesday math club. AT this time, I am creating a waiting list. I must wait and see how many 7th and 8th graders are going to attend. Any math club questions, please contact Mrs. Curtice by email. Have you visited the www.raidermath.weebly.com website lately? Go there for the most current updates of our math raiders. We had a record number of 150+ sixth graders testing for membership in the Junior Varsity Math Club. What a wonderful thing to have so many students interested in math! The following is a list of the clubs as they start meeting next week:
1. Monday – Junior Varsity I – 4:15 to 5:30. (All names are posted outside Mrs. Curtice’s, Mrs. Hitchcock’s and in the sixth grade pod area) 2. Tuesday – Junior Varsity II – 4:15 to 530 3. Thursday – Junior Varsity III – 4:15 to 5:30 Parents will need to pick up all students at 5:30. NO BUSES are available. If that is a problem, please contact Mrs. Curtice or try to carpool. The curriculum for the three JV clubs will begin with number sense and calculator skills. For three weeks, the students may attend and practice at home. After that time period, Mrs. Curtice will evaluate if any downsizing needs to occur. 4. Wednesday – Varsity Math Club I – taught by Ms. Nal 5. Wednesday – Varsity Math Club II – taught by high school students and Mrs. Curtice We welcome any older siblings who need service hours and would like to volunteer. MARK YOUR CALENDARS – PARENT MEETING – WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 QMVS – ROOM 304 – at 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. There have been some drastic changes in the fees for transportation in FBISD. Mrs. Curtice would like to share this information as well as ask for parent volunteers to take some of the organizational responsibility. Managing 4 clubs and teaching full time is too demanding. Please consider volunteering to be in charge of t-shirts, cookie dough fund raiser (very easy this year), TMSCA competitions, Math Counts competitions, etc. If everyone steps up, the job becomes much more manageable. We are very lucky to still have Mrs. Nal to help with our Varsity Math. She comes four days a week at 7th period to teach a group of 32 students in Competition Math. On Fridays, we meet in one large group as she is not available. If there are any parent(s) available on Friday who would like to team up and present mini-math lessons, Mrs. Curtice would welcome the help. OTIS RETURNS AGAIN – Cookie Dough Time Yes, we are going to be offering the Cookie Dough again. This year the process if much more streamlined. The orders will be typed in by Otis Spunkmeyer, packaged separately for each student and delivered intact. No more sorting and putting orders together! This year there is a special web link to order on line and you can send it to your friends and family! I know some people do not want to order the product, so we will have a form for donations. But that is a topic for Wednesday night. We may be using private transportation this year, so I need someone to call the list of people I have and get actual fees so Mrs. Curtice can budget. We are going to be doing a lot of car pooling this year to get to away competitions. We have marked October 11 for a Math Counts competition to be hosted at QVMS. We will be responsible for concessions. STAR LEARNING is handling all the trophies and tests. Of course, we need graders! That is more than enough for now! Please feel free to call me anytime 281-980-1320 up until 10:00 at night. I have no time during the day to return phone calls. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your students. They truly make me proud! Mrs. Curtice |
