I have attended a 2-day workshop and will attend a second one on August 4-5 to explain the changes in curriculum for upcoming school year. Many of the 6th grade topics have become 5th grade topics and many 7th grade topics have moved down to 6th grade. This will impact students taking the credit by exam the most and secondly, it will impact 6th graders.
IF YOUR STUDENT has taken Credit by Exam for 6th grade math, BE SURE THEY can do the following concepts in addition to the test. It will be expected for them coming into a 7th grade class. 1. Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide fractions (NEW) 2. Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide positive and negative integers (NEW) 3. Area and Circumference of circles, trapezoids, etc. 4. Surface area of rectangular and triangular prisms.(NEW) 5. Probability (NEW) 6. Proportions using Parts of whole(NEW) 7. Conversion of metric units IF YOUR STUDENT is coming into regular 6th grade, they should be able to do the following: 1. Greatest Common Denominator and why we use it(NEW) 2. Lease Common Denominator and why we use it (NEW) 3. Add and Subtract fractions with unlike denominators (NEW) 4. Integers – add and subtract positive (NEW) – will learn negative during the year 5. Circles – circumference and Area (NEW) 6. Make equivalent fractions 7. Understand how to simply fractions to lowest terms 8. Decimals to the thousandths place THIS IS NOT ALL THE AREAS, but it is a start. Fractions and integers are a key component of mathematics . Your student will want to master the concepts and understand all aspects of the topic. I hope to get some problems listed on the website for practice.
