ALL MONDAY , TUESDAY and THURSDAY CLUBS – will meet on TUESDAYS starting this March 3.
Tuesday we have a parent and several 8th grade students who come to help. The students can be broken into smaller groups for more individual attention. We will be focusing on the four areas of the TMSCA State Competition. All 6th students from Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday clubs are welcome. The time is 4:10 to 5:15. Thank you in advance for understanding. WEDNESDAY MATH VARSITY CLUB II – Last meeting is this week. Mr. Shui, our guest parent-coach will be teaching the club for the last time March 4 as the final qualifier for TMSCA is March 7. THE students are welcome to continue to come to practice TMSCA tests March 11 and so on, but there will be no instructor. If not, Please click here to sign up for volunteers. Mrs. Curtice desperately needs help with registration, concessions, hospitality in scoring room and set up on Friday afternoon. WE must pack the testing envelopes by counting out tests and label all the classrooms. We expect 400 students that day. We have our Dulles High School students returning to run the calculations room. Because of their success last year, these former GT Academy students have run The Village qualifier and the upcoming TMSCA qualifier at FCMS. WE are so proud of them! Your student must make ONE of these categories’ scores and then the state numbers which are lower may apply for the second, third or fourth category. Two-four parent chaperones are needed to ride the bus. Mrs. Curtice and 1-2 other QVMS teachers will be going on the buses. QVMS cannot pay for the parents room or food, but the parents are welcome to stay at the same hotel . That information will be in the students’ registration packets. WE took 70 students to The Village School and 55 have qualified! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ QVMS RAIDERS – win SWEEPSTAKES at The Village on Saturday, Feb. 21 Our students scored a record 5,770 points at the The Village School on Saturday, February 21 to take first place by 40 points. Many students placed in the top 20 to earn a medal or trophy. The second qualifier is this Saturday, February 28 at FCMS. FOR MATH COUNTS – The trophy will remain at QVMS for another year! Saturday, February 14, ten (10) students traveled to the Fluor Building to participate in the Houston Chapter of Math Counts Competition. The top seven schools and six individuals will advance to the STATE MATH Counts Competition in Austin on March 28. Quail Valley’s team of four (Andrew L., Shree M., Benjamin W., Ethan Z) won first place and the trophy for another year. Andrew L won FIRST PLACE in the Count Down Round by defeating 8 other students by answering the best of three questions. It was the greatest comeback ever…there were times he was down 0-2 and he won the next 3 questions. It is quite a feat to be able to work under that pressure with such accuracy. Also, we are PROUD to announce that we have three of the six students advancing as individuals to state: they are Kevin J.,Naveen M., and Allen Z. Our other members attending were Lauren Y., Will S., and Jeremy Z. FIRST QUALIFIER for TMSCA is THE WEEKEND, Saturday, February 21 at The Village School. We have 70+ students registered to compete in number sense, calculator, general math and general science. We will list the students next week and on our website over the weekend. There are TWO more opportunities to qualify – FCMS on Saturday, February 28 and QVMS on Saturday, March 7. ***Please volunteer to help QVMS host the REGIONAL meet on Saturday, March 7 ***** There is a conflict with the Science Bowl and 10 of our 7-8th grade students will be absent. MATH CLUB FOR February 23-27 – SEE ANNOUNCEMENT BELOW NO MONDAY ,TUESDAY Math Clubs this week due to two meetings for Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday Math Club – YES for Varsity II with Mr. Shui – Wednesday February 25 – administering the AMC 10 B for students who previously took AMC 10A Thursday Math Club – YES, but this will be the last one for the year. SEE BELOW for explanation Due to drop in attendance and the competition season, Mrs. Curtice has had to make some adjustments for afterschool math clubs. Beginning the week of March 2, Monday and Thursday clubs will be combined into the Tuesday club. We will be focusing on math skills for competition and qualifying for State in San Antonio in April. The time will still be 4:10 – 5:15 and we will have extra help available with a teacher, a parent and several 8th graders to break the students into smaller groups. I apologize if this is not convenient for your student who was attending on Monday or Thursday. With only 5-7 students in attendance each Monday or Thursday, everyone is better served by combining. They will be taking sprint, target and team tests to qualify for the State Math Counts in Austin on March 28.

They are taking tests in number sense, calculator, general math and general science. If your student missed the registration, please notify Mrs. Curtice ASAP. III. First Colony Middle School – Saturday, February 28 – Second qualifying TMSCA tournament’s registration is still open. Pick up a pink form or download one from the website. Return to Mrs. Curtice by Tuesday, February 24. IV. Quail Valley Middle School – Saturday, March 7 – Third and final qualifying TMSCA tournament. This is REGIONAL TMSCA and the registration is open until March 4. Please click here to sign up for volunteers. Mrs. Curtice needs everyone to make this a success. WEEKLY MATH CLUBS 1. Monday, February 16 – No school – No club 2. Tuesday – Wednesday –Thursday, February 17, 18 , 19 - Yes After Saturday, February 14, Monday and Thursday clubs will be combined . Only a dozen students or less have been attending on those days. Tuesday club will be for those who qualify to go to State TMSCA or who are practicing for First Colony Middle School TMSCA or QVMS Regional TMSCA. Thank you for understanding that Mrs. Curtice has to adjust the clubs according to attendance and participation at the State level. Please contact Mrs. Curtice if you have any questions. ***Mark YOUR CALENDARS for May 9 **** QVMS is hosting a state qualifier for 6th graders in the elementary Math League. More information will follow soon. If a sixth grader qualifies at this competition, he/she can attend the State Math League in June which will be held for the first time ever in Houston, Texas instead of only in California. I. DEADLINES are NEAR…. Wednesday, February 11 is the deadline to register for The Village TMSCA first qualifier. The green forms are available at QVMS from the bulletin boards or online at our raidermath website. Bring those registrations to Mrs. Curtice who will register everyone online as the QVMS team. See the qualifying scores below. II. SECOND Deadline …..Tuesday, February 24 – FCMS (First Colony Middle School) in FBISD – 2nd opportunity to qualify or practice for the State TMSCA in April in San Antonio. III. THIRD Deadline…. March 4 – QVMS Regional TMSCA – Last opportunity to qualify for the State TMSCA. BIG Things are happening on February 14 – Yes it is Valentine’s Day, but it is also the Houston Chapter Math Counts Tournament at the Fluor Building. QVMS will be returning to defend its first place from 2014. Ten (10) QVMS students will be representing our Raiders as a team of four and six individuals. This year seven (7) schools will be advancing to State as well as six (6) individuals who are not included on a team. Come watch the Count Down Round at approximately noon on that Saturday. We wish them well. MATH CLUBS – All are planned to meet the week of February 9-13. The Wednesday Varsity I is now only the 10 students working with Mrs. Nal for the Houston Chapter Competition on February 14. All other 7-8th graders are welcome to come work with Mr.Shui at the same time on Wednesdays. |
