Here is a list of our main ones. TMSCA – This competition comprises a majority of our weekend events, and we attend the annual state competition in San Antonio every spring. Below you will find links with more information. All are welcome to attend this competition! Official TMSCA Site TMSCA Event Information Math League – Our second most frequent competition is Math League. These competitions are great practice for Math Counts and are also opportunities for 6th graders, as they are able to compete at the elementary level. Many of our previous 6th graders made it to the state Math League competition. All are welcome to attend this competition! Elementary Math League Information Middle School Math League Information AMC 8 – In October of each year we administer the AMC 8 test at QVMS to all interested middle school students. Students scoring well on the AMC 8 test are then able to take the AMC 10 and AMC 12 tests. Students who perform exceptionally well on the AMC 10/12 are invited to continue participating in the series of examinations (the AIME and USAJMO tests) that culminate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). All are welcome to sign up for AMC 8 and see how far they get! AMC 8 Information AMC 8 Tests AMC 10/12 Information AMC 10 Tests AMC 12 Tests Invitational Tests Information AIME Tests USAMO Tests IMO Tests University of Houston – This is an annual competition that is subject specific. Students may choose any math subject they are currently taking or will take in the future. For example, Algebra 1 students may take Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, etc. All are welcome to attend this competition! UofH Math Contest Information MathCounts – We are fortunate to have an amazing coach, Mrs. Isil Nal, for our strongest competitors. She selects and works with a team of mathletes to prepare for the state and national MathCounts competitions each year. Although MathCounts practice competitions are open to any interested student, the official MathCounts competitions are by invitation only. MathCounts Information Problem Archive I’m not getting Math Club emails. What do I do? If you are not receiving emails about Math Club, double check the email associated with your child’s Skyward. If you find the emails at an outdated address, you can update your email preferences via a link at the bottom of the message. If you didn’t get it email[email protected]. How do I sign up for a competition? First, read your Raider Math emails carefully. They will give you all of the links and details for signing up. If the competition is one that we will officially sponsor and man with a teacher chaperon, we will ask you to fill out a Google Form giving us information so that we can bulk register our team. Please make sure that this form is filled out and accurate!! Next, you will be provided with a link so that you can pay for the competition online. The week before the competition, an email will be sent confirming your payment and registration (or lack thereof). If the competition is one that we advertise but teachers will not attend, you will be given a link to register and pay individually. For these competitions, parents need to monitor their students throughout the duration of the event. What do I do if I missed the registration deadline for a competition? If you miss a registration deadline, you can usually register the day of the competition on site. The fee for the competition is usually increased a small amount, and you will probably need to arrive early to the competition site and stay with your parent until a teacher chaperon arrives. Exact arrival times for late registrants can be found on the competition website. Which supplies do I need for the competition? Please make you have a writing utensil for competitions. A blue pen is required for TMSCA number sense tests and a calculator for TMSCA calculator tests. The night before a competition you will receive an email with digital copies of practice tests relating to the specific competition. Please plan to print these yourselves at home or take a device with which to access the digital copies. How can I qualify for the TMSCA State Competition? Each year the TMSCA directors set qualifying scores for the state meet, however, QVMS requires students to reach a different, higher set of scores in order to qualify to attend with the Raider Math group. These qualifying scores are TBD and will be shared as the competition gets closer. What is after school Math Club? QVMS offers weekly math club meetings after school from4:15 – 5:15, 5:30 or 5:45. We generally offer three to four different sections depending on interest and experience levels. The most experienced mathletes will work primarily on MathCounts material (see above for information about MathCounts). Our less experienced mathletes work primarily on TMSCA general math material as well as mental math tricks associated with the TMSCA number sense test. What is Contest Math? Contest Math is an elective class offered to 7th and 8thgrade students during the school day. Contest math students are given a placement test at the beginning of the year and then designated to a group that either works primarily with Mrs. Nal on MathCounts material or a with a QVMS math teacher on TMSCA and AMC 8. Students taking Contest Math are required to compete at least twice a semester. I want to compete in the TMSCA Calculator test. What kind of calculator do I need? Although calculator choice depends on individual preference, below are the calculators most often used by competitors. HP 35 or 33 Calculator – This is often the calculator of choice for our most successful Calculator test competitors. It is an RPN calculator, which means that computations are entered in reverse order. Although this calculator makes computations faster than non-RPN calculators, it does take a lot of practice to become adept. TI-84+ Calculator – This calculator is not RPN, so students are often able to learn how to use it very quickly. It is usually the second choice of our most successful competitors. TI NspireCX Calculator – This is the calculator used in math classes, so the benefit is that you will already know how to use them. The Nspire CX calculator has many features that “do the math for you,” so some students like to use the CXs for competition. However, these are generally disliked by our strongest competitors because they take significantly longer to process computations than either the 84+ or HP calculators. How can I prepare for competitions? There is a wealth of information online specific to each competition. You can usually find specific information about competitions as well as released practice tests. Below are some links to information and practice material. Official TMSCA Site TMSCA Event Information Elementary Math League Information Middle School Math League Information AMC 8 Information AMC 8 Tests AMC 10/12 Information AMC 10 Tests AMC 12 Tests Invitational Tests Information AIME Tests USAMO Tests IMO Tests UofH Math Contest Information MathCounts Information Problem Archive (MathCounts) Some other great sites MathNinja – Excellent videos for TMSCA Number Sense shortcuts MathCounts Minis – Videos showing how to do common MathCounts questions Number Dojo – an app that helps students practice Number Sense skills! Art of Problem Solving – online lessons and classes as well as the site for AMC-IMO test information Khan Academy – high quality topic-specific lesson videos I don’t want to pay for competitions online. Is there another way? We highly recommend using our online payment system; however, you are also able to pay us directly. Snober Tazani ([email protected]) is in charge of collecting payments. In the event, a payment must be made in person, a check made to QVMS is the preferred method of payment. The check should have the students name, ID number and grade level listed along with any relevant test information. If neither online payments nor checks are an option, then the exact amount due should be submitted into an OPEN envelope with the student's full name, grade level, payment amount and exact tests listed on the cover. When payments are made in person, the form filled online for registration must be submitted with the check or cash to Ms. Tazani during Raider Time only. Please be advised that if you go to make a payment during class time or passing periods, you will be asked to come again during Raider Time. It is also important that students arrive at the beginning of Raider Time, as students will need to wait for receipts to be made and registration lists to be updated. A pass will be handed out in during Math Club or available in Ms. Tazani’s classroom that will allow students to leave class during Raider Time to make payments. This pass must be kept in a safe place for the remainder of the year, as new ones will not be assigned. Payment deadlines will be announced separately for each grade level. It is important that you note the deadline for your grade level dues, as they will not be accepted after that date. Please do not wait till the last day(s) to make payments as this will lend itself to errors in payment and general stress for everyone! After a competition, where do I pick up my test(s) and/or awards? We have amazing volunteers who have agreed to help us distribute competition materials for us the week following a competition. The volunteer table will be set up during students’ lunch periods, so students can visit the table to pick up their tests and any awards received. After that, students who do not visit the volunteer table will need to see their math teachers for any needed items. Copyright © 2016 Quail Valley Middle School, All rights reserved.
